1911 Pleyel modèle 3 grand piano

On display in our central London showroom, 32 Newman Street W1T 1PU

A 6'8" Pleyel grand piano in a high gloss black cabinet

This magnificent 1911 Pleyel Modèle 3 grand piano represents the golden age of French piano making at its finest. At 6’8” in length, the Modèle 3 was one of Pleyel’s most celebrated models — large enough to deliver concert-level projection and bass depth, yet refined enough for the most discerning domestic setting.

Our workshop has undertaken a comprehensive restoration over many months, preserving this instrument’s remarkable heritage while bringing its performance to the highest modern standard. The work includes a new Ciresa soundboard crafted from premium spruce from the Valle di Fiemme, a new custom-fitted Renner action offering the precision and responsiveness expected by today’s pianists, complete restringing throughout, and a refinished high gloss black cabinet that presents the instrument in immaculate condition.

All restoration work has been carried out to the original Pleyel specifications, honouring the acoustic design principles that made these instruments so revered. The decision to fit a Renner action - rather than attempting to restore the original Pleyel double repetition action - reflects our commitment to delivering an instrument that feels familiar and responsive to the modern player, while preserving the Pleyel tonal identity.

Tonally, this Modèle 3 is almost perfectly scaled. The bass register is cello-like in its richness and warmth, the tenor powerful and singing, the lower treble dark and colourful, and the upper treble sparkling with crystalline clarity. This is the authentic Pleyel voice - the tone that captivated Chopin, Debussy and Cortot - heard through an instrument restored to the peak of its potential.

This piano would suit a serious pianist, festival, collector or music lover seeking an instrument of genuine historical significance with exceptional playing qualities. It is available to play at our Fitzrovia showroom in central London.
